Program: Core SKILLZ (7 to 9 yrs.)
Skill: Concentration
Drill: High, middle, low
Equipment needed: One wave per line
Instructors needed: One per line

Description: The students will develop concentration with their kicks by hitting the wave bag with low, middle, and high combinations. This will help them concentrate on multiple commands while also building accuracy in their kicks.

Steps:

  1. Divide your students into lines.
  1. For each line you will need a wave bag with two pieces of tape that divide the bag into low, middle, and high sections.
  1. Explain the rules:
    • I will call out a 3-move low, middle, and high combination.
    • You will hit the pad with the proper combination.
    • If you make a mistake, then you have to do 5 push-ups.
  1. Continue until each student has at least three turns.

Drill: Math challenge
Equipment needed: One wave bag cushion per line
Instructors needed: One per line

Description: The students will practice having concentration with math problems while kicking over a pad. This will help them concentrate on problem solving while also having to concentrate in keeping their chamber leg high while they kick over the pad.    

Steps:

  1. Divide your students into lines.
  1. For each line you will need a wave bag cushion or stack of targets for the students to kick over.  
  1. Explain the rules:
    • I will call out a math problem with the sum equal to between 1 and 10.
    • The sum of the math problem will be the amount of reps that you must kick over the pad with.
    • You must do ten push-ups if you get the math problem wrong, if you put your foot down before you complete your reps, or if you knock the pad over.
    • You will solve three math problems per turn.
  1. Continue until each student has at least three turns.
  1. Increase the sum to be between 11 and 20 on the second turn; and between 21 and 30 on the third turn.

Skill: Concentration
Drill: Ring twister
Equipment needed: Eight rings per group
Instructors needed: One per group

Description: The student will practice having concentration by playing a fun game of twister. This will help them concentrate on their left and right while also concentrating on having balance so they do not fall. 

Steps:

  1. Have your student’s pair up with a partner and then divide the partners into groups.   
  2. For each group you will need 8 colored rings or circles. If you do not have colored rings, you can create rings on the deck with colored electrical tape.  
  3. Explain the rules:
  4. I will call out a specific body part and the ring that you must place that body part in.
  5. Examples would be:
    • Left or right hand or finger
    • Left or right elbow
    • Left or right foot or knee
    • Your head
  6. If you fall then you are out and your partner is the winner.
  7. Continue for two rounds.  
  8. You can make it fun by seeing how many commands that can do together as a team without falling.
